WELCOME TO ROSINA ANIMAL CENTRE.
|
|
Rosina Animal Centre has been in operation for 8 years and started purely by accident, after volunteering to take the phone calls for a bigger animal charity based near London we wanted to help in what ever way we could, after a few months we were already seeing the charity struggle to help all the animals they were asked to take, we felt we could help a few animals by offering our home and grounds to animals needing safe and temporary places to stay until new homes could be found, we took on a couple of Dogs, Rabbits, Tortoises and Parrots but after a few months we had already run out of space and could not help any more, we set up a Facebook page and this website to ask for help by asking for bedding, feed and anything people could spare for the animals. We expected a little help but were overwhelmed by the generosity of the public, we received a ridiculous number of calls from people offering help but also had rescues and charities asking us to take on their animals they had no room for that would have to be destroyed if a safe place could not be found in time, we decided to start rescuing and rehoming animals into perfect homes
A year passed and we were already rescuing and rehoming animals at speed, local authorities and businesses were
offering their support and we grew at an exponential rate
We were asked to take on an elderly Horse who was going to be destroyed, then 2 Piglets who were to be slaughtered, a Sheep who a farmer needed gone and a flock of Chickens and Ducks that needed rescuing, Rabbits being bred from but the breeders could not find homes for the babies, Wild animals that have been injured coming to us until their release, Tortoises and Terrapins who were being sold by pet shops and giving new owners incorrect advice on care.........and more animals kept on coming
We were fast out growing our 5 acre capacity and running low on funds to support the residents we had taken on, we knew we had to set our sights on being able to raise needed funds so instead of relying on donations from the public and businesses we aimed to become financially stable by producing and selling items which could successfully support the charities needs
By this time we had over 150 animals including farm, domestic, rare breeds, exotic and disabled animals, our biggest costs were feed, Vet and maintenance costs so we started growing salads for the rescue animals, slowly we realised we were pretty good at growing food so increased our salads to Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Berries and Mushrooms
We also grew edible plants that fed the animals but were able to sell them to local people raising extra funds eventually we were feeding 40% of the animals using these crops, we now grow over 20 crops and are looking to grow edible leaves next year
Sadly our Vet bills cannot be reduced although our vet is always slicing off what ever he can to keep costs down but we have embarked on Solar power to run our Vivariums and heated sheds and are collecting rainwater to provide clean drinking water and filling up of Terrapin ponds and Duck ponds which saves a fortune, we now raise the majority of our funds through reusing the wood from the old trees we have to cut down in our woodland, instead of throwing them away we make woodchip, sell logs and create decorative items to sell, we also make our own compost by recycling all of the waste and bedding the animals produce which gives excellent crops for the coming year
We have conservation as a huge part of our rescue centre now, people need nature and nature needs people, people care and maintain for the habitat and this encourages wildlife and biodiversity, the more care spent on the small aspects the bigger the difference can be made, we plant fruiting vines, Hedgerows and native trees around the rescue to give feed over the months and put up Bat and Bird boxes to protect them from harsh weather, the funds we have left over at the end of the year is put back into planting new plants and providing various types of shelters and housing using vegetation, our aim this year is to create a wild area for wild Hedgehogs and to source plants that flower through the year,

As you can see we produce a lot at the centre to raise funds and feed our rescue animals but we are aiming higher next year, we intend to be 70% self sustainable with vegetables to feed the animals, feed to sell, water production and electrical needs around the centre. It requires a lot of time and effort so we are also going to need volunteers who are not afraid of some hard work, by becoming sustainable we can save a lot of money and devote more to the Veterinary Treatment and our conservation efforts.
We are due to start a planting project, planting more trees and shrubs that can feed more of the rescue animals and wildlife to help them through the winter months will start in February and then onto erecting more fencing and enclosures so there is enough to keep us busy for a few months.
Here are some of the people and animals we have at the centre

This is Carrie, she was handed to me over our gate age 10 weeks old, she already knew what fear was at that young age and the lady said please take her or she will be hurt by the so called owner.
She came to live with us and was very much loved, this year sadly aged 2 we lost her, she went in the vets to have a lump removed and she never came out of the aneasthetic, I am sad that she never really had a life, but the little while we had her I am sure she was happy, R.I.P Carrie my Darling x

This little one was bought to us recently as he was found in someone's garden and cannot fly, but this does not hinder him as he climbs all around his cage. And now he has Rossi for company x

The smaller of the two is the male, the Larger one is the female and they are exremely close, we are waiting for a while before putting them in our pond, just so they can settle.
The Male is quite friendly, but the Female has her moments and sometimes hisses and goes into her shell.

BLONDIE
We had a call asking us if we could take this lovely little girl in as her family moved away and left her to fend for herself, she was not very good at fending for herself as she was very thin when we took her, she was put in an outside cattery and we tried to rehome her, no luck, so after 3 weeks we took her upstairs to live with my Daughter Vicky, she is here to stay xx
BAMBI UPDATE
Had the vets in today because we were worried about Bambi, she looked like she was in pain and could barely walk.
She is on pain killers at the moment and has had a blood test....Waiting for results
UPDATE........Bambi has been diagnosed with Cushings and has to have a tablet for the rest of her life, which isn't easy as she keeps spitting it out, even when I try to disguise it, But since she has been on tablets, she is a lot better and is walking normal xx
UPDATE ON BAMBI.......SHE REFUSES TO TAKE TABLET AND HAS NOT HAD ONE IN MONTHS, BUT THIS YEAR SHE HAS BEEN GREAT AND HAD NO TROUBLE WALKING X

JACK/JACKIE.
This is jack/jackie, she is a lovely bird but is a bit noisy.
Jacks owners were sad to give her up but knew it was necessary due to the screaming that jack has got into the habit of doing. She screams for about 10 minutes a few times a day but she is getting better and it helps that she has a bond with Alan as she is eager to please him.
Jack likes to walk around on the carpet and has the occasional fly but usually has an awkward landing, she seems happy in the conservatory with our other birds and enjoys watching the doves fly back and forth in the back garden.
UPDATE ON JACK/JACKIE........SHE HAS STOPPED SCREAMING AND IS NOW TRYING TO TALK......YEEEEEAAAAA !!!!!!!!!!!

Also we have had to have the vets in for Bambi which at the moment the bill is £116.00 and ongoing....If you could help us we would be so grateful xx

This is Jacko, The friendliest African Grey I have ever known x
Some of our Budgies
The Budgie on the left was going to be euthanised by someone in a pet shop, but we were there and asked if we could take it home, as you can see his legs are on the side and not under him so all he did was lay at the bottom of the cage in the pet shop as he just cannot walk, we decided to give him a chance and if his quality of life was no better then we would take him to the vets and put him to sleep.
We put in another Budgie who was on his own and as you can see they get along fine, she can climb and fly but finds it hard to land so on the other side of the cage she has a platform where she can land and lay down... I think she is happy.

Pretty Little Bean.
This is Coffee Bean, she was dumped at our gate in a box or mixed sexed rabbits.
UPDATE ON COFFEE BEAN.....Coffee Bean was not quite herself a few days ago, we checked her bum and saw a Maggot and realised she had fly strike, we quickly tried to remove it and then noticed more coming from her behind...we called the vet and they told us to get her to them urgently and they would have a vet on standby, they advised us to put her bum in water and try to wash them off,We were deverstated as she is checked all the time and her hutch is always disinfected, the vet said they would do all they can but they may have to put her to sleep, because maggots eat the insides of rabbits, then go into shock and die....apparently if a fly lays eggs it only takes 6-8 hours for them to hatch and burrow in.
I am pleased to say we caught her in time and now she is fine and well on the mend, she had medication for a few weeks but is now off all her medication....
A RAY OF SUNSHINE
THIS IS SUNNY, SHE SHARES HER CAGE WITH HARRY AND DAISY.
THIS WAS HER CHOICE, AS WHEN WE USED TO LET HER OUT OF HER CAGE TO FLY, SHE WOULD FLY STRAIGHT TO HARRY'S CAGE AND GO IN, SO WE LET HER STAY.

ANNIE SHETLAND PONY
WE REHOMED ANNIE FROM A PONY RESCUE AFTR WE HEARD THAT SHE NEEDED A HOME WITH NERO, SHE HAD BEEN BADLY NEGLECTED BY HER OWNERS WHO LEFT HER KNEE DEEP IN HER OWN MUCK AND COVERED IN LICE.
SHE IS HAPPY NOW
SHE IS HAPPY NOW
THIS IS KATE, BAMBI AND ANNIE. KATE IS OUR FRIEND AND HELPER AND IF I EVER NEEDED A HOME FOR ANNIE KATE WOULD TAKE HER AS THEY ARE VERY CLOSE.
STANLEY
THIS IS STANLEY HE HAS BEEN WITH US SINCE HE WAS THREE MONTHS OLD, HIS MUM REJECTED HIM AND THE FARMER WAS GOING TO PUT HIM INTO THE FOOD CHAIN BUT THANKFULLY A FARM WORKER STEPPED IN AND TOOK HIM HOME AND BOTTLE FED HIM, BUT WHEN SHE REALISED HE WAS GOING TO NEED MORE ROOM THAN HER SMALL GARDEN, SHE CAME TO US. SHE HAD ALREADY HEARD OF US AND SEEING AS WE ARE NEXT DOOR THE FARM, SHE KNEW SHE WOULD STILL SEE HIM EVERYDAY AND THAT MADE GIVING HIM UP A LITTLE BIT EASIER.
WE HAVE HAD STANLEY NEARLY TWO YEARS NOW, AND HE IS LOVELY, ALTHOUGH WE DID HAVE OUR PROBLEMS, THE MAIN ONE BEING THAT HE KEPT HEAD BUTTING VICKI AND MYSELF AND WAS ACTING QUITE AGGRESSIVE, BUT THAT HAS NOW STOPPED.
I THINK HE HAS REALISED WE ARE NOT A THREAT, HE GETS REGULAR FOOD, HIS OWN STABLE AREA WITH THICK STRAW BEDDING WHICH IS SHELTERED FROM RAIN AND WIND,THE ODD FOOD TREAT AND LOTS OF FRIENDS WHICH ARE THE DOGS.
HE TOLERATES THE PONIES IF HE HAS TO, BUT THE PIGS ARE QUITE SIMPLY OUT OF THE QUESTION, HE DOES NOT LIKE DOLLY & CHARLIE AT ALL AND WHEN THEY ARE LET OUT, HE IS OFF LIKE A SHOT.
STANLEY IS NO LONGER WITH US, HE SADLY DIED.

THE STORY BEHIND GEORGE WAS THAT MY BROTHER KEVIN WHO PRACTICALLY LIVES IN THE GEORGE PUBLIC HOUSE, PECKHAM ,TOLD ME THAT THE THEN LANDLORD WAS EMMIGRATING AND SHE HAD TWO DOGS TO REHOME, ONE WAS GEORGE AND THE OTHER WAS A ROTTWEILLER, I WOULD HAVE HAD THEM BOTH BUT SOMEONE HAD ALREADY TAKEN THE ROTTY, SO I PAID £75.00 FOR GEORGE AND NEVER LOOKED BACK.
HE WAS A LOVELY DOG, BUT THAT WAS ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO, SADLY THIS YEAR IN THE SPRING GEORGE PASSED AWAY PEACEFULLY IN HIS BASKET,HE DIED WE THINK OF A HEART ATTACK, AND HE WILL BE SADLY MISSED.
IN HIS LATER LIFE WE USED TO CALL HIM THE OLD GIT, AS HE NEVER STOPPED MOANING, ESPECIALLY AT BECKY,HE WOULD NOT ALLOW BECKY INTO MY BEDROOM, THEY WOULD GO FOR EACH OTHER AND WE WOULD HAVE TO PULL THEM APART,YET HE WOULD LET ALL THE OTHER'S IN.
BUT WE WILL MISS GEORGE. XXX
